Your Charger's Local Access Password

Your charger has its own setup hotspot and setup page. You can use them to set up Wi-Fi without Bluetooth. The local access password protects both.

The local access password needs charger firmware 1.72 or later. Chargers on older firmware use a different password. See Older firmware.

What it is for

  • The setup hotspot. The charger's own Wi-Fi network, called PlugStream-XXXX. XXXX is the last 4 characters of the charger's serial number. The local access password is its Wi-Fi password.
  • The setup page. The page you open once your phone or laptop has joined the hotspot. Log in with the charger's serial number as the username and the local access password as the password.

Each charger has its own password.

Where to find it

  • The Local access card in the box. New chargers come with a card that shows the hotspot name and the password. Scan the QR code on the card with your phone camera to join the hotspot. Keep the card somewhere safe.
  • The MyPlugStream app. Open your charger, go to Charger settings, and tap View under Local access. Tap Show to see the password, or Copy to copy it. The app also shows a QR code that joins the hotspot.
  • MyPlugStream Cloud. The Local access card on your charger's page shows the same details.

What the app shows depends on where the password came from:

The app shows What it means
The password on the card in the box The charger still uses the password on its card.
Set in the app on (date) The password was set or generated in the app.
Changed on the charger on (date). Not shown. Someone changed the password on the setup page. The charger never sends that password to PlugStream, so the app cannot show it.
Waiting for the charger to confirm A new password has been sent, but the charger has not confirmed it yet. The old password works until it does.
This charger doesn't have a local access password yet The charger came without a card and has not been given a password yet. Use the older firmware password until it has one.

Who can see it

  • Only the charger's owner can see the password in the app.
  • PlugStream Support can reset the password for you, but cannot see it.
  • Only share the password with people you trust with your charger, such as your installer.

Change the password

A new password must be:

  • 8 to 63 characters long, using letters, numbers, spaces, and standard symbols
  • different from the charger's serial number and the hotspot name
  • not one character repeated, such as aaaaaaaa

In the app

  1. Open your charger in the MyPlugStream app and go to Charger settings.
  2. Under Local access, tap View.
  3. Tap Set to choose a password, or Generate to let the app create a random one.
  4. Wait while the app shows Waiting for the charger to confirm. The charger must be online.

If the password was last changed on the charger, the Generate button says Reset. The app asks Override the password set on the charger? before it replaces it. If you override it, the password set on the charger stops working.

On the setup page

  1. Join the charger's setup hotspot and log in to the setup page. See Setting up Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Local access.
  3. Enter the current password, then the new password twice.
  4. Tap Save new password.
  5. The hotspot restarts with the new password after a few seconds. Your phone or laptop drops off the hotspot. Join it again with the new password.

A password changed on the setup page is not sent to PlugStream. The app shows Changed on the charger and cannot show the password, so keep a note of it.

If the charger does not have a local access password yet, the setup page cannot create one. It is set from the app.

If you have forgotten the password

The charger is online

Open Local access in the app and tap Generate (or Reset). The app shows the new password once the charger confirms it.

The charger is offline and you have the card

Use Restore the card password. This puts back the password printed on the card. It uses Bluetooth, so you must be next to the charger. Your phone needs an internet connection, but the charger does not.

  1. Stand next to the charger with Bluetooth turned on on your phone.
  2. Open your charger in the MyPlugStream app and go to Charger settings.
  3. Under Local access, tap View.
  4. Tap Restore the card password, then Restore.
  5. Choose your charger from the list of nearby chargers.

The charger goes back to the password on the card, and its hotspot restarts with it. Any other password stops working.

A charger that came without a card goes back to the adoption code on its shipping-box label instead.

You have no card and cannot use the app

Contact PlugStream Support. They can reset the password once the charger is online. The new password appears in the owner's app.

Too many wrong passwords

After 5 wrong passwords, the setup page stops accepting logins for 60 seconds. Each further wrong password doubles the wait, up to 15 minutes. The page tells you how long to wait.

When the charger changes owner

When a charger moves to a new owner, PlugStream sets a new local access password automatically. The previous owner's password stops working once the charger confirms the change. The new owner sees the new password in their app.

The password on the card in the box no longer works after this. The new owner can put it back with Restore the card password.

See Transfer ownership or moved house.

Older firmware

On firmware before 1.72, or on a charger that does not have a local access password yet:

  • Hotspot password: the adoption code printed on the charger's shipping-box label. Enter it exactly as printed. Use the code on the label, not a code shown later in the app: the app's code can change when the charger is claimed, but the charger keeps the code on its label.
  • Hotspot password on the oldest chargers: chargers supplied before adoption codes existed, and chargers on firmware older than 1.45, use the serial number instead. Type it in capital letters with no spaces.
  • Setup page login: the charger's serial number. There is no password.

Chargers receive firmware updates from PlugStream while they are online. See Firmware updates. You can see your charger's firmware version in the app under Charger settings.
