Can I get a 7 kW charger at home?
Most UK homes with a suitable single-phase electrical supply can be assessed for a 7 kW PlugStream charger. The final decision depends on the property, supply capacity, earthing arrangement, cable route, and installer assessment.
What affects suitability
Your installer may check:
- main fuse size
- consumer unit space and condition
- earthing arrangement
- available supply capacity
- cable route from the supply to the charger
- where the charger will be mounted
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet availability at the charger location
- whether load balancing is needed
Why load balancing may be recommended
If the property has limited spare capacity, load balancing can help the charger reduce its charging rate when the rest of the home is using more power.
This can make a home charger practical where running at the maximum rate all the time would not be appropriate.
Do not self-install
A dedicated EV charge point must be installed by a competent installer in line with the installation manual and applicable electrical regulations.
Do not attempt to install or modify the charger circuit yourself.
