What are MPAN, main fuse, looped supply, and CT clamp?

Your installer may ask about MPAN, main fuse size, looped supply, or CT clamp during an EV charger survey. These terms help them understand the property supply and how charging should be configured safely.

MPAN

MPAN means Meter Point Administration Number.

It identifies the electricity supply point for a property. You can usually find it on your electricity bill or by asking your electricity supplier.

Your installer or Distribution Network Operator may need it when checking supply details or notifying the charger installation.

Main fuse

The main fuse is the supply fuse for the property. It is usually near the electricity meter and service head.

The fuse size helps the installer understand how much current the property supply may be able to support.

Do not remove seals, pull the fuse, or open the service head. Only the Distribution Network Operator or authorised personnel should work on this equipment.

Looped supply

A looped supply is where two or more properties share part of the incoming electricity service cable.

This can affect EV charger installation because the available capacity may be shared. If a looped supply is suspected, your installer may need to involve the Distribution Network Operator before or after installation.

CT clamp

A CT clamp is a current sensor that measures electrical load on a cable.

In EV charging, a CT clamp may be used for load balancing. It helps the charger understand how much power the wider property is using so charging can be reduced when needed.

CT clamps must be installed in the correct direction and location by a competent person.
